The William Buckland Radiotherapy
centre employs specialist oncology
nurses. Each nurse cares for the patients of two radiation
oncologists.
The nurse that meets the patient when they attend the new
patient clinic will be the nurse who looks after the patient
throughout treatment. The nurses are a source of information
for patients
and educate patients about their radiotherapy treatment
and side effects.
They can also arrange referrals to other services within
the hospital if required. The nurses work closely with
all members of the William Buckland team as well as the
wider
hospital community to ensure the patients
receive the best possible care.
There are also two Cancer Support
Nurses located within William Buckland. They are available
to any oncology patients as well as their families.
Any of the William Buckland staff can arrange this,
or they can be contacted during working hours on 9076
3369.
The nurses are involved in research as well as ongoing
education with post-graduate studies. They provide
education to student radiation therapists, radiation
therapists and staff within the hospital.
Additionally they are involved in patient support groups
such as Living with Cancer, and, The Brain Tumour Support
Group. The nurses also serve on committees locally
and nationally aimed at improving cancer care.
